Analysis of Site and Urban Context:
METHODOLOGY
You should return to the site many times, at different hours, to observe the qualities of each. There are two principal tasks for this site study:
1. Group Site Documentation.
The studio will build a model of the sites. The model is to be constructed so that each student can insert an individual model of a design proposal. These include site sections / elevations showing all of the relevant surrounding buildings and other significant elements. Prepare 3d CAD model of the site. You will have to close all the contour polylines and take all elements to the right elevation.
Physical model 1/64” = 1’-0”
Deadline Wednesday September 26th:
2. Group Site Analysis.
The studio will prepare a series of graphic depictions of critical observations (analytical diagrams) presenting the character and context of the site. One subject per sheet, in a graphically organized format that encourages reading the diagrams as a suite of related documents. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Location Relative to Business Core and Landmarks
· Urban Fabic (figure ground etc.) at many different scales including portions of Cities of Beverly Hills and Los Angeles. This should include street grids and orientation.
· West Hollywood Master Plan.
· Size and Principal Dimensions
· Topography
· Vegetation
· Sun Orientation and Shading from Existing Buildings
· Winds
· Vehicular Access and Circulation: both cars and trash trucks
· Pedestrian Access and Circulation: relationships to existing pedestrian movements
· Noise
· Building Footprints: figure / ground
· Building Massing: adjacent existing buildings
· Land Use: adjacent existing uses, and use patterns, daily and weekly
· Views to the Site: main viewpoints from which it is seen
· Views from the Site: main view opportunities
· Major Buildings and Institutions: relationship to site
· Public Transportation: main bus routes, Dash routes, rail stations
· History of the Site / Area: historical use patterns
· Major Distances: to city hall, Freeway, Major Boulevards, Public Transportation
· Cultural Context: events held in the area, visitors to the area, public uses
· Demographic Information
· Material Palette, Building Fabric: character of adjoining buildings
· Streetscape: trees, bus shelters, benches, streetlights, traffic signals, paving, etc.
· Street Grids and Orientation
· Scale
All this to be documented on a total of six color sheets: 36 x 42
Deadline Monday September 24th
3. Individual Model
Each student should prepare an interpretive site model describing how he or she sees the various urban forces on the site and what that might mean for the placement and shape of the new library and park.
This is a conceptual model, your library massing could be indicated and it need not be realistic, but must be to a scale. Include lots of context.
Deadline Monday September 24th
